This is a non-edible ginder that produces a red pinecone-shaped "bulb" with white flowers. The bulb can be miked, and the liquid inside can be used to soften skin or to produce a lather similar to shampoo. In fact, this kind of ginger is also called "shampoo" ginger! The leaf stalks die back each winter, and additional "friends" appear with the new growth each spring. Great for container gardening and in shady spaces.
